Money Worries and Tips from Jesus - Matthew 6:31-33

Worrying about money is common whether we have plenty or little. Let me ask you, Have you ever worried about having enough to pay a bill? Or knowing how you were going to feed your family? Or perhaps your money concerns relate to the pursuit of a God-dream.

Anxiety about finances can cause some serious issues with confidence. It can cause us to shy away from pursuing the goals and dreams that God has placed in our hearts. It can cause us to lower our moral standards to get money. After all, it has driven people to lie, steal, and cheat in desperation.

Today’s verse is straight from the words of Jesus himself and speaks directly to our faith in the area of finances.

Focus Passage:

Matthew 6:31-33

31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Main Takeaways:

- Worrying about money is common whether we have a lot or a little

- The cure for worrying about finances is refocusing our attention on the Kingdom of God and seeking it above all else.

Seeking 1st the Kingdom of God in Finances

  1. Work diligently and have integrity - Show up on time and complete the tasks assigned to you. Do what is right even when no one else is watching.

  2. Give your worry to the Lord - when you feel anxious about bills that need paid, spend time praying specifically for the Lord to make a way. Then be on the lookout for opportunities to fill the gap.

  3. Be generous and tithe - giving money away seems counterintuitive when you are struggling financially, but God's economy doesn't make worldly sense.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,

We can feel unworthy and insecure when we find ourselves in a season of financial lack. Remind us of your promises, your goodness, and your favor. We ask today that you will help us seek first the kingdom of God. Help us lay down our worries at your feet, knowing you provide for all our needs. And help us to be generous even in seasons when we have very little to give.

In Jesus' name,

Amen
